As to not delve into private matters, Iā€™ll compare my experience with this subject referencing a tv series and itā€™s themes, particularly, the walking dead. The character of Daryl in that show has stuck around his group since the beginning of the outbreak that devastated and practically ended the world. Over everything heā€™s been through, even when separated from his group, heā€™s constantly tested on is his loyalty to his group, his family post-pandemic. With that, he often desperately tries holding onto humanity, and time again after every tragedy he re-discovers his priority and lets the otherā€™s humanity rub off on him.
His primary drive becomes protecting those he wouldā€™ve never imagined to protect, because theyā€™ve demonstrated compassion in the face of the worldā€™s bleakness and inhumanity. One of his problems lie in his feeling as an outcast, and he goes back to it a lot of the time when he encounters any disaster from his closest members. God forbid he lets anyone close, because losing them will hurt too much to continue living with, but despite having that mindset, he allows himself to enjoy and share the otherā€™s company. He goes forward with people, yet still treads carefully and hesitates to break from his reservation. In a way, he prepares himself the best he can to expect death and disappointment.
This sort of theme of faith and family is one of the central explorations of the show. Ultimately those doubts and flaws, and the cynical defenses brought about by the world and people are the struggles the characters attempt ridding themselves of, and eventually Daryl finds a balance to be realistic and strong while still inviting the goodness the world holds for them. He carries on for the love of his people and whatever faith lingers on.
In the real world, post-apocalypse aside, we can apply this to groups as well or into an individualistic form. We strive to accomplish our dreams in part because of the people we care for, if not for every other wonderful thing the world can offer. In the other hand, we do what we do to try and live with ourselves. Self love and our own expectations is a hard feeling and organization to master. Being scared is almost always going to happen, but it is important to familiarize ourselves with our intentions and remind each other of what weā€™re worth. We shouldnā€™t grow to shy away from things because we have it bad, there are alternatives, there are opportunities, and if provided it would be better to run with it and fail than to be scared of the thought of it and never learn from it.
