Have you ever been to a restaurant that sells insects?

On Sunday I went to Bakan, a Mexican restaurant in Wynwood, Miami, where I went out to eat with my parents. I ordered octopus and my dad ordered worms… Bakan has a section in the meu that is just for insects such as ants, worms and, crispy grasshoppers. I’ll take a pass on that. However, they do have very good high-quality food.

Since we went on a Sunday morning it was packed so it is recommended that you make a reservation before showing up. It’s a restaurant in between bars so the music from next door overpowers. Bakan is the only restaurant in South Florida with over 500 types of mezcal. To match the Bakan vibe, dress casual-chic for a visit for lunch or dinner. And try not to clash with the cactuses!

Bakan organizes every dish on the menu with a color-coded agave plant. Keep an eye out for their blue-corn tortillas that are made in-house. You can see them press the tortillas one-by-one in their open-faced kitchen.

What to Order

To start, you can’t go wrong with the broiled Queso Fundido Chorizo with Oaxaca and Chihuahua cheese served with a side of Pico de Gallo. If you like octopus, your going to enjoy there octopus dish which comes with two tentacles, corn and, cheese filled green peppers or of your more of a steak person then I recommend the prime rib eye which is very tender and juicy.
