Fossil Fuels are a Lost Cause
The market for fossil fuels is a lost cause. What may be the biggest and most influential market in the entire world during the market, could spell for an ultimate disaster in the future. In the article “Fossil Fuel’s Dirty Secret: Climate Action or Not, Things Look Bad,” the author Jeremy Deaton (2018) opens up with an interesting analogy.
In the opening paragraph of his article, he compares the global fossil fuel market to when Blockbuster ruled the movie business but had its legs cut out from beneath it by streaming services such as Netflix. Deaton (paras 2–3) states that “the collapse of Blockbuster wouldn’t be so funny. It would be a catastrophe. This, experts warn, could be the future of fossil fuels.”
Deaton goes on further to elaborate on how “Prices are likely to crash before 2035, costing the global economy as much as $4 trillion…” (para 4.) If the world’s fossil fuel market were to completely crash, the entire worlds economy would plummet. Nations would begin to fight over resources as a result and this would complete absolute chaos.
In order for us to prevent something as terrible as a complete crash is to begin to transition to more stable forms of energy. These other forms of energy also happen to be much cleaner than the burning of fossil fuels. The coal industry for example burns billions of tons of coal each year which produces tons of heat and smog which goes up into the atmosphere. Some of the best applications that new and renewable forms of energy can apply is in automobiles for example.
Deaton (para 9.) states that nations “would likely be better off, having transitioned to cheap, renewable power and electric cars. They would likely also be spending more money on clean technology produced at home and sending less money to fossil fuel producers overseas.” Not only will the environment be affected in a positive manner going forward, but this will help to make nations potentially more self sustainable. Which in turn will improve domestic economies because less imports of fossil fuels would be needed, plus there could potentially be less diplomatic disputes. All signs point towards the future going with clean energy, so fossil fuels should be left in the past.
