What If

I see my daily progress
At the bottom of my coffee cup.
It begins so innocently, so temptingly fresh,
Ideas percolate, thoughts swirl round and round,
Mix with a dash of chemistry,
Shot through with uncertainly,
And unfurl into a frothy frenetic frenzy, which then
Peter out into tepid, languid thoughts
For tomorrow’s inspiration
And I’m left with just another dried ring of what if.
