A Lesson From Mr. Beast

In an interview [1], ultra-mega-YouTuber Mr. Beast attributed his early YouTube success to 2 things. 1) being completely obsessed and 2) being surrounded by people who are also obsessed.

Imagine either of these without the other. Obsession is powerful, but even a mediocre team can out-produce a highly motivated individual. On the other hand, a community is powerful, but the details of who you surround yourself with matter (being a member of “Pizza & Pints” won’t help you with your weight loss goals.)

The Power of Community

This is a testament to the power of a community of like-minded individuals. A (great) team is more than the sum of its parts, which means something special happens when the right people work together. There’s a magic that makes their output together far greater than if apart.

But why is that? What’s so special about a community of like-minded individuals?

Here are some thoughts:

  • The group can cover more ground than the individual. So everyone learns lessons faster.
  • The group can do more repetitions than the individual. So everyone develops skills faster.
  • The group can build more than the individual. So everyone makes a bigger impact.

Where the Data Entrepreneurs at?

I have always been inspired by the idea of a community like this. This is what motivated me to seek out such a community in the realm of data entrepreneurship i.e. technical data people who also have an entrepreneurial itch.

However, as I searched Google and Reddit, the results were bleak. There were communities of data folks (mainly people working in technical roles) and communities of entrepreneurs, but not many communities of both.

This is Harder Than I Thought

While it may be easy to imagine your ideal community, actually finding it is much harder. In my case, we’re talking about: data science and entrepreneurship. Either one is can be enough for anyone.

The niche felt too niche.

But instead of submitting to this roadblock, I kept going. And turned the obstacle into an opportunity.

How to find your ideal community

With about 5 billion people on the internet, there is practically nothing that is “too niche.” If you are genuinely passionate about something, it is almost certain that others are too. You just have to find them.

“Okay.. but how the heck do I find these needles in the world’s biggest haystack!?”

It’s simple, you don’t. They find you.

“If you build it, they will come”

For all the criticisms and concerns surrounding social media, it is really good at one thing: showing people content they want to see.

Therefore, one strategy for finding your ideal community is to make content specifically for them.

Every piece of content you create is an opportunity to for a new connection. And every connection you make with someone like-minded is one step closer to your ideal community.

It may take a lot of steps, but if you do it long enough, you will get there.

And so, with this roadmap, The Data Entrepreneurs was born.
