In today’s data landscape, managing large volumes of data efficiently can significantly impact the success of businesses. Microsoft Fabric’s Fast Copy feature is a transformative tool that changed how data is moved and managed, offering speeds and ease of use. Let´s see how we can leverage Microsoft Fabric Fast Copy following a step-by-step.

Accelerating Data Movement

Microsoft Fabric Fast Copy dramatically accelerates the process of data transfer, enabling businesses to handle their data operations more efficiently. For those unfamiliar with data pipelines, the introduction of Fast Copy is a game changer. It simplifies the once heavy data movement processes into mere minutes of setup and execution, ensuring that what used to be a half-day task is now completed in minutes.

How It Works

1- Let´s begin by creating a data pipeline in our Fabric Workspace by clicking New -> Data Pipeline.

2- After creation, we got some options in our data pipeline canvas, where we can create our pipeline from zero or we can use some assistance to begin with. I´m going to use the Copy data assistant to start to leverage the fast copy data movement.

3- Now we are beginning our selection flow for our data. First, we are selecting a Data Source.

4-Make sure to test the connection to your source.

5- You will be able to select tables or make queries directly to your source. I will pick a list of tables that I want to copy, from my database WideWorldImportes, from schema Sales.

6- Time to choose a data destination, and I will choose a Lakehouse for that purpose.

7- Now you have an important step, Column mapping. First, since we are talking about a Lakehouse for destination, we need to choose the root folder between Tables and Files, then choose if we want to load to an existing table or if we want to create a new table, from the creation of a new table like I did, you will have the option to do the column mapping for each of your table that you selected previously.

8- After you finish all the configurations, make sure everything is set and start your data transfer.

9- The Copy process will start, a default parameter value was created with all the tables that you are about to copy along with every mapping configuration.

⚠️If you need to make changes to this configuration, you will need to update the parameter value.

Key Takeaways

The Fast Copy in Microsoft Fabric signifies a leap towards more agile and efficient data management. The ability to quickly transfer data not only saves time but also allows businesses to react faster to data-driven insights. For any business struggling with data latency or complicated data pipelines, Fast Copy offers a straightforward, efficient solution.

To make this even better, we need a way to change configurations without the need to mess up the parameter or recreate the copy activity. This would be cool for the majority of the users.

Conclusion

Embracing Microsoft Fabric Fast Copy can significantly enhance your business’s data operations. By integrating Fast Copy into your data workflows, you’ll experience not just faster data movement, but also a more streamlined, effective approach to data management.
