I first heard the phrase spend your time like you spend your money from the renowned author and entrepreneur Brian Tracy. He was giving a speech on how to work smarter and not harder and urged people to perceive time management through the same lenses as financial investment.

At first, I did not understand what he meant, so I decided to look at different money-spending habits to try to understand his reasoning. Despite all our diverse financial spending behaviors, the universal core value that governs how we spend money is the highest return we get on the investment: emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Every time we use money, we ensure to get the highest reward; otherwise, we shun from using it and discipline ourselves to wait for something better.

What Brian Tracy was trying to put across was investing our time in activities and situations that yield the highest profits to our psychological, emotional, and physical energy.

The Reasons
It Helps us Focus on the Most Significant Matters
Spending our time like our money encourages concentrating on the most significant tasks that will result in rewards, which would be growth and success.

For instance, no woman would spend substantial money on wack-ass beauty therapy products and routines because good grooming enhances our confidence and sense of power; the same should apply to our time.

We should focus our time on our priorities and the 20% of the tasks that push us toward eminent progress and success. Valuing the most significant activities helps us prioritize our time and energy to the beneficial matters that augment our growth and fruitfulness.

Eliminates Wastage
Nobody likes to waste money, even those who spend on things that seem odd to most. Whatever money we spend, no matter how wasteful and illogical it may seem to the outside world, has a reward we are getting in return.

Ensuring that every time and energy invested brings forth the highest benefits and returns will eliminate time wastage on irrelevant things.

It helps people discipline themselves to avoid wasting time and opportunities on issues that don’t propel them toward resourceful results and ultimate growth. Spending our time like money fosters careful and strategic planning on how to get the best possible results and benefits; our time investment has to offer and eradicates distractions that waste our breaths and energy.

Spending our time like we spend our money seemed like odd advice at first because I could not understand it, you know, considering all the spending habits that are impulsive and unhealthy. The ideology means to encourage getting the highest reward for our time and overall energy investment. It means to guide us to ensure we follow the path of growth, progress, and success.
