A lot of cool tech was released this past year, including but not limited to the Galaxy S8, Galaxy Note 8, iPhone X, Google Pixel 2, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max, and so much more. I could go on and list every cool tech product that launched in 2017 — and the list would be really long. What I’d actually like to do, is take time to highlight my three favorite from this past year and decipher them for you.

Starting with Google Clips, I thought this device was really creative. This camera runs on auto-pilot and shoots whenever it determines great lighting, framing, and expressions. Life is spontaneous, and I think this camera can capture that better than anything else out there right now. No internet needed to capture, it is safe and secure, and works nicely with Google Photos.

The Google Home mini packs epic into a tiny body. With this device, you can have Google Assistant in every room of the house at an affordable price. It’s priced at $49 as opposed to the $129 price tag on the original Google Home. And if you’ve been taking advantage of Google’s holiday deals you may have snagged one for as low as $29 this season. You can ask Google Assistant almost any question and it will respond will a useful answer. Whether that is information pulled up from the internet, shopping, fun and games, your calendar, the weather, cooking recipes, you name it — Google Assistant does it. Want to ease the burden of remembering a to-do list? Let Google Assistant remember that for you, and tell it to remind you at the right time.

The Google Pixel 2 is Google’s latest in-house mobile device. I am a big advocate of the Pixel brand when I talk to friends and family about tech — because the camera on this thing takes sharp photos, and the entire device is really, really smart. On top of that, this phone lacks the main drawback of most Android phones. The typical drawback is not being able to enjoy the latest version of Android (something Apple fans always use as a main argument for owning an iPhone). This phone doesn’t have that problem. When a new version of Android is available, you get first dibs at it. This device also has a dedicated AI imaging processor — and that’s extremely cool. It’s called the Visual Core and allows for hardware accelerated machine learning image processing. I’m pretty sure that has a lot to do with the quality of photography that this beast can take.

Happy New Year! 2018 should be really exciting, and I can’t wait to see the new tech that companies will launch this year. Stay tuned @The Decipher
