Is gay the new black?

Why the marriage equality debate shouldn’t exist

Here in America there is a heated debate in every state arguing whether or not gay people should be allowed to marry. It’s been going on for years and even died down a little bit for a while; now it’s back and more aggressive than ever. As of January 6, 2014, 17 states have legalized gay marriage. However, heavily outnumbering this long awaited social advancement, 33 states have some sort of ban on gay marriage. Here in the United States, you will learn that you have all the freedoms in the world… Until they interfere with someone else’s beliefs. As the gays of our great nation have come to realize, the freedoms we enjoy become constricted when they call for a reformation of social acceptability. Just as African Americans overcame the prejudice and racism they endured for so long, gays now seek to break free from the chains of a “one man, one woman” marriage. It seems to be that this country we call home fears change of any sort. Because gay relationships interfere with the bible, which is not held sacred by every citizen in the US, it has been labeled an abomination to traditional ways. It saddens me to see that intelligent minds refuse to come together to help our country progress and advance as one. It is frightening that they, instead, would rather hold back our nation from achieving strength and unity. So long as we continue to outcast our neighbors for having different beliefs and falling in love with someone with the same genitalia, we will continue to sit in the dark, one side holding the flashlight, the other holding the batteries, acting like stubborn jackasses that are too proud to work together.

I worry about the future of our city. Any accurate reading of the bible should make it clear that gay rights goes against the plain truth of the word of god. As one preacher warns, man and overstepping the boundary lines god has drawn by making special rights for gays and lesbians has taken another step in the direction of inviting the judgment of god upon our land.

This step of gay rights is but another stepping stone toward the immorality and lawlessness that will be characteristic of the last days.

This ordinance represents a denial of all that we believe in and no one should force it on us. It’s not that we don’t care about homosexuals. But it’s that our rights will be taken away, and unchristian views will be forced on us and our children. For we would be forced to go against our personal morals. Outside government agents are endeavoring to disturb god’s established order. It is not in line with the bible — do not let people lead you astray.

The liberals leading this movement do not believe in the bible any longer. But every good, substantial, bible believing, intelligent, orthodox christian can read the word of god and know what is happening is not of god. When you run into conflict with god’s established order you have trouble. You do not produce harmony. You produce destruction and trouble and our city is in the greatest danger that it has have ever been in, in its history. The reason is that we have gotten away from the bible of our forefathers.

The speech above is taken from 50's and 60's preachers, all in support of racial segregation. All the speaker did was simply take out the phrase racial integration and substituted it with the phrase gay rights. It’s a neat little twist that really opens people’s eyes to the hypocrisy of these anti-gay activists.

I don’t understand how people can feel so much hatred and disgust towards a group of people they don’t need to associate themselves with. So much in fact that they need to go so far as to take away their right to be married. We aren’t born this way. We aren’t born with hate.

The image above is a perfect example of hate being taught. An innocent little girl is standing outside with her mom when that man comes up and asks if she knows what that sign means. It absolutely disgusts me to see someone do this to their kid. A child that trusts you and will believe anything you tell them is incredibly vulnerable to this kind of manipulation. Hate is not inherent. Hate is taught.

I keep trying to figure out why people get so upset about gay marriage. After all, it has absolutely no effect on the lives of non-gays. Zero. It is, practically speaking, a change in legal formalities giving people certain rights and responsibilities. So why do people get so worked up considering that the day gay marriage is legalized will be, for most people, just like any other day? And that’s when I realized that that is precisely why certain people —religious authorities in particular — are so scared. They are scared because nothing will change. For all their bluster and dire warnings of moral collapse due to homosexualty, not one thing will be different in most people’s lives. Which is in complete contradiction with how they want people to believe the world works. And so their authority will be undermined in its entirety. More people will realize that they do not need that authority to tell them how to live, and this terrifies them!

Two people of the same sex getting married is absolutely not anyone’s business and it has no affect on your life whatsoever. To deny them the right to get married is no better than telling a black man he can’t sit in the front seat, or a woman that she can’t vote. Where do these people get these ideas? Oh, that’s right, the Bible. The same book that says women can’t teach and have no authority over a man.(1 Timothy 2:12) The same book that tells you to stone disobedient children.(Deuteronomy 21:18-21) The same book that demands you kill people for working on Sunday,(Exodus 35:2) that a woman must marry the man that raped her,(Deuteronomy 22:28-29) and that owning slaves is okay.(Exodus 21:20-21). I don’t see them preaching anything about these topics and yet they’re willing to stand in front of buildings and shout about how God hates gay people and they shouldn’t have rights because of one line: Leviticus 20:13.

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Does anyone know of any reason for so much hate OTHER than “the Bible says so”? I have never met a person who could tell me a reason other than that. If this is a religious matter then keep it out of our laws and government because the separation of church and state is an actual thing. People claim that marriage originated in the Bible, which of course isn’t the case and if you want to make that case then you should familiarize yourself with the other types of marriages in your holy book.

Interestingly enough, the ultra-religious states that want gay marriage banned watch the most gay porn. You can see for yourself right here. Just a funny little fact I thought I’d share. Here is a quote from that page.

According to PornHub, which teamed up with BuzzFeed to release the results, the highest number of gay porn searches come out of Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia—5.58 percent, 5.44 percent, and 5.38 percent, respectively. Also on the top ten list were Florida, Alabama, and New Mexico.

Every southern state had more gay porn searches than the average in states where same-sex marriage is legal. In general, states with gay marriage bans watch 7 percent more gay porn than states where gay marriage is legal.

For so many years gay men and women had to live in fear of being rejected by their friends and family for coming out as a homosexual. They still do. The battle isn’t over but I have hope that it will be soon. I’m 19 years old and out of everyone in my generation that I have met, zero are apposed to gay people. I have hope in my mind that this is a generational problem and when it’s our turn to step up to the plate and this generation of haters is long gone there will be no more fear. As an atheist I share a similar problem in that it’s socially unacceptable to not believe in some kind of deity. I have to mask it and be careful about what I say so others aren’t offended because I don’t share the same beliefs. Well why is it that I should remain silent? Why can’t I question someone that believes in a magic sky wizard when it’s those same people that take it too far and hurt people around them for not believing what they believe? I’m not saying that this is all religious people of course. However, to those who do take it too far and who do hurt people just because they’re a little different; you repel me.

If you gathered nothing else from this article, remember this; we do not crumble in the face of a fight. We stand proud, together, ready to take on the obstacles that will be thrown our way. The difference between them and us is this: we are not afraid of change. We will not have our authority undermined in the end, because we never sought to strip another of their rights, as a human being. Change is inevitable. It will happen, whether you choose to accept it or not is up to you. But in the end, victory will be ours. So stand tall, gay men and women of America, and let the world know that you will not be silenced. They will all look foolish when it’s said and done. Because when the dust clears, gays will have won their right to marry.
