Cepperello is a rat of the lowest degree, who “collects debts” for a gentleman you to whom you wouldn’t want to be beholden. He travels on “business” to a city where he is not known, and before he can get to work, he falls deathly ill. His last confession is his most beautiful lie…he tells a story so impressively false about the purity of his own life, that the priest not only shrives him but brings his dead body to the church and preaches sermons on the beauty of the dead man’s life. Cepperello is venerated as a saint.
I mean really, would that fly today? A person who lied, cheated and stole, bullied and blustered their way through life turns out to be worshipped and prayed to? Surely, as a collective we humans would know better! I mean really!
MORAL: People are idiots. Even if they don’t mean to be.Especially.
