After reading several music theory books and watching the pre-requisite YouTube videos, I felt I had a good idea about the basic techniques for creating a melody and writing a chord progression to go along with it. I wanted to create something unique, but ended up with just that — a common chord progression. It turns out, after all, there is not much new under the sun.

Eight to the bar

The end result from my daily practice today was so bad, I almost gave up and started from scratch — but just as I was about to delete the recording, I decided to hit RECORD instead and have a bit of fun. This turned into the proverbial key that unlocked the melody in a way I would enjoy fleshing out.

I had listened to the original recording for STOIC so that I had a point of reference. To make sure the feel of the original was still there, but to free myself and try something new. I also wanted to include some of the exercises and techniques I have been reading about. The overarching idea is that at the end of the day I would have moved the idea forward, but also continue to improve on technique.
