What is the purpose of a designer?

Design is said to be a tool, but designers on the other hand should not be.

What is the purpose of a designer? I think the most obvious answer is to create value for clients.

But how do we define value? The meaning of value has changed greatly over the last decade. Value then was creating designs. Value today is helping businesses.

Designs should be as strategic as the designer. Design has now become a strategic business advantage over the competition. Today, designers are in the same room, learning and lending insights to clients. They are using design to drive business strategy and to help clients navigate the market better. Most clients do their own research to help them decide what they want, but designers can still guide them, regardless of industry.

Designers should use design thinking to hinge on empathy. Designers should learn to become design thinking experts — after all, we are people creating things for people. Not just ‘things’ per say, but valuable things people, including ourselves, would want to use.

The purpose of a designer is to create value for clients by making ideas and products better.
