What comes to mind when you think about empowering women in technology? For me, one of the most important things is support. Technology in itself is empowering, so having the support to gain knowledge in this field is important for women. To gain a little insight, I asked some women in our office their thoughts on the topic.

Mindy Bender, a Video Team Specialist, said, “When I think about empowering women who work in technology, I think of someone who is confident in not only her abilities but herself as well. She knows who she is, what she can do, and what she brings to the table. Empowering women takes everything that is going against them and turn it around to prove people wrong.”

Another Video Team specialist, Janie Fulling, added, “When it comes to women working in technology, and really women working anywhere, empowerment means getting women involved in projects so they can show what they’re capable of. When we feel confident, we can do anything, and I think the more we prove what we can do, the better our work will be.”

Last week, several of my coworkers and I had the opportunity to attend the 8th annual Women Working in Technology Conference. Many of us also attended last year and came out feeling informed, inspired, and motivated about our roles in business and technology. This year, we all left feeling a little different.

The day started with a presentation about positive psychology given by a husband and wife team. They talked about things like resilience and optimism versus pessimism. Followed by this was a series of presentations about cyber security. One of the highlights of the day was when Corps member Lexy Madrid, along with Peggy Cenova, led a discussion about social media.

“I think getting to present with Peggy was really beneficial for me because she is such a great example of what a professional women can achieve in this industry,” said Lexy.

We talked about what social media is good for, why you should be on it and how to showcase the best version of yourself. I found this discussion the most rewarding because we were all learning together by bouncing new ideas off of each other.

This year’s event was attended by 8 proud women working in technology from the Digital Corps.
