Occasionally, Digital Corps students get the opportunity to attend industry conferences and trade shows with the help of Digital Corps travel scholarships. Recently two members of the Design Team, Kelly Miller and Denise Blankenberger, were awarded a scholarship to attended An Event Apart in Nashville, Tennessee — an educational learning session for web designers, or as Kelly and Denise described it: three days of design, code and content.

Over the three days at the conference, Kelly and Denise listened to presentations from a variety of speakers, covering topics that included CSS grid layout, meaningful design, and art direction on the web. Denise said the diversity of topics allowed her to gain a better understanding of the workflow of a project from the very start.

“It helped me just to start to piece together all the different stages of our projects and understand it better — really streamlining a really efficient and good design.”

Kelly and Denise hope to bring some of the best practices they learned at the conference to the Corps. This would involve blurring the lines between teams and leveraging our User Experience team to gain better insight on how people will use the sites and apps we create.

They gained new ideas and concepts at the conference that they are excited to put into practice with the Corps and their future careers.

“This is really cool because this is what they’re actually doing in the industry … and we have the opportunity to be doing that here at the Corps,” said Denise.

Since returning from the conference, Kelly and Denise have started organizing workshops to share the information they gained with other Corps members.
