Design Team Specialist, Alex Dils, has been working with the Corps for two years. During his first week when he was getting situated at his desk, then Video Team Master Dan Edwards, who had a jar full of candy, saw that his jar was open. When he started questioning who had eaten all of his candy, he got no response.

“Then he told everyone that he would put rat poison in his candy jar and everyone was kind of giggling under their headphones and it kinda set the tone for the kind of environment I was going to work in — with a bunch of fun people who were willing to joke around.”

Through his work with the Corps, Alex learned how to really express his ideas to clients and his fellow designers.

“I think that part of being a designer is that we have to sell what we’re making to people and really convince them that they should trust us with what we’re going to make for them.”

Along with these communication skills, Alex said he will take the web and interface design skills he learned with the Corps into his career.

“The Corps has allowed me to expand my design horizon and work with multimedia.”

At the beginning of this year, Riley talked to Alex about leading by design. This stuck with him and he hopes that other designers can go into meetings confident in what they’ve made.

“Be confident with what you make. Don’t second guess yourself if you think it’s good and enjoy what you make. Be passionate about it.”

After graduation, Alex plans to head to San Francisco. His dream would include being a designer by day for a creative studio while also being involved in glass blowing and teaching classes.
