Welcome to the Digital Corps, we make apps.

Well, not quite.

If you’re familiar with Ball State University and have heard about the Digital Corps, you’ve probably been told that we’re the students on campus who make apps. While it’s true that we create things like the Campus Map App and feature numerous games on the giant touchscreen outside of our office the Digital Corps houses so much more than student-led app development.

The Corps is broken up into five different teams that each specialize in specific skills. We have students working in video, communication, design, development and even user experience. Let’s not forget about the best office assistants in the world either!

We do work for clients at and off Ball State’s campus. We create videos, design websites and other assets, develop applications, manage social media and compile research based on user experiences and interactions. Teams often collaborate on projects in order to produce the best product or service. It’s not uncommon for a Video Team member to work closely with a Design Team member on a project or a Communication Team member to brainstorm app content with the Development Team.

While some pumpkins work diligently, others are scolded for their troublemaking during the first annual Digital Corps Pumpkin Carving Contest in October 2015.

The Digital Corps operates on a guild-based system. It’s kind of like a video game: by working hard, and completing certain tasks, you rank up. Experience points are gained by completing training and working on projects with other teams. Below are descriptions of the different levels of Digital Corps employees.

The Apprentice: A Digital Corps Apprentice is responsible for collaborating with team members on projects, learning new skills in their area of study and understanding all of the ins and outs of the Digital Corps culture.

The Specialist: After being promoted to a Specialist, the employee’s responsibilities increase exponentially. They contribute to Digital Corps projects as they are assigned, lead and assist workshops, attend team meetings and even mentor new Apprentices.

The Master: These are the top dogs and the cool cats with the Digital Corps. Masters prove that they are true leaders and emerging experts in their field. They have excellent time management skills and have demonstrated loyalty to the mission of the Digital Corps. Masters lead projects and work closely with staff members and other employees to produce the best product or service.

With the Digital Corps, students take advantage of a close-knit community to produce top-quality work. Students grow technically and professionally during their time at the Corps as they develop lifelong friendships. The Corps works hard to guarantee a productive future for hard-working students, allowing them to gain experience in the fields of study they love.
