The internet has kicked down the door of the world, barged in, and claimed a place at the head of the table. There is no stemming the tide of digitization- particularly in the way modern businesses operate. The entrepreneurial spirit has thrived in the digital era, sparking the rise of an enigmatic term: ‘digital entrepreneur’.

While traditional entrepreneurship has been reserved for the few Steve Job’s and Elon Musk’s of the world, digital entrepreneurship holds an allure for the rest of us as a realistic goal. With the relatively easy access to the internet, digital entrepreneurship has become popularized as the alternative path to success for anyone with a laptop and motivation.

What is digital entrepreneurship?

Digital entrepreneurship is described by the European Commission (EC) as the “utilisation of new digital technologies… to improve business operations, invent new business models, sharpen business intelligence, and engage with customers and stakeholders through new channels.”

The same report by the EC goes on to highlight the potential digital entrepreneurialism has in boosting the economy and cultivating job growth. It advocates businesses to operate at their full digital potential in order to reap the most benefits it has to offer.

We’ve long associated success with traditional entrepreneurialism. But the truth is that digital entrepreneurs are fuelled by the same spirit as the little kid who runs the lemonade stand or the multi-millionaire CEO. The digital entrepreneur is no different than any other entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurialism is defined by a passion, dedication, and skill set to create something out of nothing. Modern digitalization fosters this entrepreneurial spirit in society through online channels. It allows creative, enterprising minds to have the tools to follow through on their ideas.

This is a beautiful thing.

With the internet and all its possibilities, dreams can become realities, stories can be shared, people can be connected, and innovative businesses stand a chance.
