Why do we always try to keep up in a world that will leave us?

Another day has passed and the long weekend is over. People are getting back to their own respective places — rushing back as if their lives depended on it. It was as if yesterday was just another day that came by, that the events that happened yesterday were just another part of the experience to forget time. How did we reach this point? Did we really forget how we used to value a day in our lives?

Just like a raging tide hitting the shore and swallowing those that are in its path on a stormy day. This fast-paced world ate us whole and we allow ourselves to be eaten by it. We used to be people with dreams, people that were enthusiastic in life — we were confident that we can take on the world.

Yet, here we are.

Confused — struggling to keep up with the speed of the world.

Why are we rushing?

Why do we always try to keep ourselves ahead of others?

Let me ask you a question. When did these two thoughts ever cross your mind?

For me, these questions occasionally visit my mind as I blankly stare into the nothingness — whether it be staring at the ceiling of my room in the middle of the night or as I stare into the distance trying to contemplate the bitter realities of life.

Perhaps these questions come into mind when we only start to feel the exhaustion in life. That only when we become so disenfranchised that we come to realize that we are slowly becoming the people we promised ourselves to never be. That instead of changing the world, the world changed us.

Whether it be good or bad, we’ve inadvertently changed.

Some may say that change is within our nature, but is this kind of change sustainable for us?

We try to change ourselves to adapt to this fast-paced world that we became destructive to ourselves. We began to be so immersed in chasing distractions in this fast-paced society — we slowly began to allow ourselves to rot from the inside, just to have an opportunity to close the gap between us and the world. Maybe that’s the reason why most of us Gen-Zs are slowly realizing that the world isn’t going to adjust itself and stopped bothering on chasing it. Rather, we chose to let go of its bounds and do things at our own pace.

Because we saw how the previous generations suffered for trying to take on the world by its own rules. How we saw numerous failures that became part of the bitter history of living in this fast-paced society. A caveat that we took in our hearts, promising ourselves to never repeat the failures of the past.

Perhaps it’s time to take things slow, let the world run fast, and watch it go.

After all, life is not about rushing — it’s about doing things you enjoy at your own pace.
