To Get Better at Photography, Do the Same Thing

And keep doing it

Do the same thing? How do you get better if you keep doing the same thing?

What I mean is try something new and doing that thing over and over. The problem is, as a photographer, you end up in a rut. Shooting the same things the same way with the same equipment. Well, guess what? Your images will always look the same. Pick one thing and change it up. Then keep doing it until it becomes part of your repertoire.

Change Your Equipment

You probably have one camera, and you shoot with your favorite lens over and over. Change to something else and then stick with the new equipment for several days, or even weeks. Shoot with only your cellphone. This will give you a fresh perspective on framing and composition while making you think about the shot and how to capture it. Or put a single prime lens, say a 50mm, on your camera and leave it there for weeks. If you are used to just shooting with zooms, using a prime for a while will improve your photography. Zooms have a place in photography, and I use mine all the time, but they can make us lazy. Trying out new equipment and then sticking with it for a while will make you more creative and teach you lessons you will carry with you in the future.
