A better diplomacy is the latest series from the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy. It focuses on innovative approaches to diplomacy, from the U.S. State Department, to diplomatic services around the world, to the outside groups that also shape the practice of international relations.

To complement our weekly analysis of current global issues, this series seeks to go beyond the issues of the day to explore the over-the-horizon challenges that will condition the limits and opportunities of diplomacy. Over the past year, our authors, many of whom are current or former diplomatic practitioners, have written on a range of issues, including the challenges of virtual diplomacy during the pandemic, employee retention at the State Department, what the U.S. government can learn from private sector organizations, and the core challenges of diplomatic leadership in the 21st century. We have also covered ISD’s Diverse Diplomacy Leaders speaker series on the importance of building a U.S. Foreign Service that reflects America’s diversity.

Building on our coverage of these issues, A better diplomacy features profiles, reflections, and analysis. Pieces published so far include:

A better diplomacy asks a number of questions of its authors: What should diplomatic leadership look like in the 2020s and beyond? What innovations will be necessary for diplomacy to thrive as a tool of statecraft? How can the United States and other diplomatic services harness the diversity of their populations to recruit and retain the most capable and effective diplomats?

The series draws on insights from ISD fellows, staff, and students, as well as U.S. Foreign Service officers and diplomats from around the world, with contributions from outside voices who are working to build a more innovative, data-driven, and responsive diplomacy for the modern world.
