Dear Future President,

The people of our food system need to be a central issue of your campaign.

We’ve learned to care about ingredients, GMOs, and pesticides, but it’s time to put equal emphasis on the millions of invisible hands that make our meals possible. In your time in office, you must bring bring more awareness to #TheHandsThatFeedUs.

Unfortunately, the food system has been as invisible in this election cycle as food workers are in the minds of most consumers.

When we think of minimum wage, unsafe working conditions, and undocumented immigrants, it is no shock that the food industry is the first to come to mind. But, this is about more than just protecting workers’ rights. We are imploring our government to celebrate and promote food workers’ stories, so that we can teach Americans to both know and care about the people who feed us.

If we build a system that facilitates transparency at every link of the supply chain, where the people of our food system are highlighted instead of hidden from view, where we support local farmers and purveyors instead of corporations that produce industrial “food products”, our country will be healthier, safer, and more prosperous.

That’s why we’re joining the Union of Concerned Scientists, Food Policy Action, HEAL Food Alliance and numerous other endorsers in supporting Plate of the Union, a campaign to raise the voice of Americans who care about food issues during this election season.

These five steps can be taken during our next president’s first year in office and are crucial in ensuring Americans have access to healthy, affordable food that is fair to workers and good for the environment.

Please join the thousands of other voices who have already signed our petition.

We might not have the money of the Super PACs that advocate for industrial farm subsidies and the proliferation of processed foods, but we believe our collective voices can speak as loud as their dollars.

Two things you can do right now:

Join the movement: Take 10 seconds to sign the petition and show the next president that you care about improving our food system.

Spread the word: Share this article on your favorite social media site or click this button to tweet at @HillaryClinton and @realDonaldTrump and tell them that you care about the #PlateOfTheUnion and #TheHandsThatFeedUs!
