Josephine will be closing its doors on Friday, March 30, 2018. As a small company, we just aren’t financially able to continue to support the logistics of supporting our mission as well as our cooks, our employees, and the investors who continue to put their trust in us to do what’s best.

We still see a future in which home cooks are free to earn an honest living feeding their friends and neighbors. The laws are moving forward to make that possible, but unfortunately, we’re just not there yet. Closing down our current business operations and continuing our policy work independently feels like the best way for us to continue advocating for the food system we know can be possible.

As we come to the end of this chapter, we still hope you’ll join us in keeping the spirit of the Josephine community present in our everyday lives.

When is Josephine officially closed?

Final Josephine meals will be served on Friday, March 30, 2018.

Can I still order meals?

Yes! And please do. We would love if you continued to support you cooks through 3/30. Note that we’re also providing our cooks with tools and resources to help them continue serving their communities in different ways. If you’d like to opt into communications with your favorite cooks beyond our last service date, you can do so here.

Can I still sign up as a new customer?

New customers will be able to sign up until 3/30. Our impending close date is communicated in the sign-up process, but new customers will be able to order meals until that day comes.

I have been ordering food from my favorite cook for years. How do I support them after Josephine closes?

Each cook will be making their own personal transition. It’s best to ask them how you can continue to support their small business in the future. Your account dashboard now includes an option to share your contact information with your favorite cooks so that they can keep in touch. In the meantime, we’re waiving our 10% fee on all orders so that our community can continue to support each other, with 100% of proceeds going directly to your local cooks.

I have meal credits/gift cards. Can I get a refund?

Purchased meal credits will be refunded the first week of April. Unused gift cards will be refunded to the customer who purchased the gift card. Until then, all credits can still be used to purchase meals.

How do I stay involved with Josephine’s mission?

The business-side of Josephine may be coming to a close, but we’ll be continuing our policy work. Access to home cooked food is the core of our mission, and we haven’t given up on that. We’ve created the C.O.O.K. Alliance to organize the hundreds of nonprofits and tens of thousands of individuals who have come out in support of more inclusive food permitting laws around the country. What about your legislation?

In 2018, the C.O.O.K. Alliance is supporting the California Homemade Food Operations Act (AB 626), authored by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia. AB 626 will create a new permit for the small-scale sale of meals from home kitchens. If AB 626 becomes law, it will be the first bill of its kind in the United States and will the C.O.O.K. Alliance will work to support implementation in California as well as to encourage similar legislative efforts in other states.
