All the cat litter boxes were untouched at 5 a.m. earlier this week, which was unexpected and alarming. The boxes were pristine, no pee, no poop.

The cats were not crowding around my feet, meowing, awaiting their breakfast; this was unprecedented behavior. I filled their dishes and tracked them down. Not one cat wanted to eat. They sniffed the food and walked off.

Egads. What calamity had struck their stomachs that prevented them from eating or even being interested in breakfast, a meal they usually gobble?

Was it the fish instead of chicken for breakfast that was the culprit? I served chicken at lunch. No takers. I served their favorite meal for dinner. Not one cat ate.

Time passed and the litter boxes, aside from pee, remained poop-free. The conclusion was they were constipated. But why and from what? The cat food brands I feed them haven’t changed in years.

They needed a laxative.

MiraLAX is a safe laxative for cats. The standard procedure is to dissolve the powder (I used one-quarter of a teaspoon per cat) in water and mix it into their food. This was not possible with…
