Codes To Help You Recycle Plastic
Have you ever noticed the running arrow triangle on plastic containers? They are a recycling clue for that particular plastic item.
From 1 to 7
Not all plastic is created equal. How it’s made will depend on how or if it is recycled. Symbols and numbers on plastic bottles and containers give us a clue.
The symbol looks the same and is a running arrow triangle shape, but the number in the center of the symbol defines what type of plastic it is.
The numbers define whether the item is plastic or resin. Most plastic containers are recyclable, but there are exceptions.
The Codes and Scale
Here is a short explanation for each number on the 1 to 7 scale.
1 — PET or Polyethylene terephthalate
Typically used to make condiment bottles, soft drink, sport drink, or water bottles.
Recyclable without lids.
2 — HDPE or High-density polyethylene
