The Power of the Swap
Organizing clothing, decor, and plant swaps
I made my trek to 22nd Street in Minneapolis late on a Saturday morning. I saw a Back the Vag sign posted in my friend Mallory’s yard, surrounded by asters and a rainbow of other plants — all of these told me that I was in the right place.
I popped open the porch door and was greeted by Fellini, Mal’s extra-social black and white cat. I gave out a quick yell of, “Hello, anyone home?!” And Mal’s sing-song voice chanted back from the depths of the house, “Come on in!”
Boxes of records were strewn around the porch, and as I wove my way between stacks of clothing in the living and dining rooms, I made note of a new pair of socks I’d like and my favorite Sublime album playing.
Every few months, Mal or one of her connections hosts a clothing swap. The rules are: everyone brings three to five gently used items they no longer need but think someone else may find useful. No major rips, stains or wear. When you choose or are checking out an item, others can say “second” or “third” to let you know they’re interested if you change your mind and no longer want the item.
The system works.
I’ve stocked a good part of my closet from these clothing swaps — plus I’ve cleaned…
