When you write a story do you think about how you will reward your Medium readers for giving you some of their valuable and scarce time to read your piece?

You sit down and hammer out 500 or 1000 words in your niche expecting — nay, hoping — that a few people will engage. Well, here are my words on reader rewards.

No cash, no competition

And by rewards I obviously don’t mean hard cash or the chance to enter a competition and win something useless.

By reward I mean something that brings the reader to the point of clapping or following you on Medium, maybe even take more of their time to consider what was the most notable combination of words and highlight them.

What rewards can you build in to your writing?

Here are a few of my ideas:

  1. Generate a positive emotional impact in your reader — a ‘feelgood’ response
  2. Identify and explain something they’ve always wondered about — something that will switch their light on, like say, if I wrote a simple introduction to quantum mechanics (just kidding).
  3. Inject humor (as distinct from #1) and lighten up their day
