Jeremy clenched his jaw to stop the yawn. He didn’t want anyone to say he was too tired to visit the prince after all his sessions.

He staggered down the corridor behind the other boys. His brain felt muffled like it was wrapped in a thick blanket. If he could, Jeremy would sleep for days and days and days. But he needed to visit the prince.

Jeremy leaned against the doorway of the headphones room and waited for the blanket to unwrap from his brain.

‘Sit down!’ A Mate was glaring at him. ‘You’re holding everyone up.’

Jeremy sat down and put on his headphones. He closed his eyes.

He wasn’t sure if the buzzing sound came from the headphones or his brain. It was too loud for him to fall asleep, but it made him feel like he was something close to asleep. Jeremy sat back in his chair and relaxed. He hoped he’d feel more awake after the session, more awake for his visit with the prince.

And then, with no warning, the guitar music blasted, even louder than usual. Jeremy jumped out of his chair and put his hands on his chest to stop his heart from bursting out. He wondered if this was what it felt like to have a heart attack.

They never played music during the second headphones session, so Jeremy had gotten more of a…
