Our June sermon series at CityPoint Community Church focuses on the topic of The Social Gospel. The Social Gospel is all about how we actively present our faith in the church and outside of it. As the Lord’s prayer says, “on Earth as it is in Heaven,” we are exploring what it means to show faith and what it looks like to activate that faith both inside and outside of the church.

This devotional, connected to the sermon series, reflects our June Community Group titled “The Social Gospel according to MLK.” So, even if you cannot join, you are still able to engage with what is being discussed and learned in that group.

In this community group, we look at Martin Luther King, Jr. as a social figure and Fannie Lou Hamer and Shirley Chisholm with each week allowing their texts to converse with one another. This devotional chooses one speech from each to show the social and biblical aspects of social justice.

With these figures, this 3-day devotional will serve as a way for readers to see how three historical figures activated their faith. We hope that it encourages you to find what you care about and start your faith as well.

Day 1: Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is widely known for his I Have a Dream speech, but his Letter from a Birmingham Jail has become more of a reference point for the public in recent years. Day 1 of this devotional will look at this speech and biblical passages to help you connect what you read to the word.

Day 2: Fannie Lou Hamer

Fannie Lou Hamer is the woman who said, “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.” And this devotional will look at parts of that speech. Day 2 of this devotional will look at this speech and biblical passages to help you connect what you read to the word.

Day 3: Shirley Chisholm

The first Black woman to be elected to Congress, Shirley Chisholm, is “unbossed and unbothered.” Day 3 of this devotional will look at the Unbossed and Unbothered speech that Chisholm gave at Howard University and the accompanying biblical passages.

As always, these devotionals will offer you the space to reflect with guided reflection questions.

Thank you for rocking out with us! We hope you enjoy this devotional, and don’t hesitate to share it with your friends, family, and social media homies!
