The California gold rush began in 1848. Captain Sutter, a German, had, in 1939, pledged allegiance to Mexico and had been granted a huge tract of land in the Sacramento Valley. James W Marshall was employed by Sutter in January 1848 to construct a Mill on a fork of the American river, 60 miles east of the present city of Sacramento.
