We all face the tough stuff of life. Emotionally, physically, and financially. But, without reservation, I’ve found that my peace in the storm is realizing the supportive arms of Jesus.

One of His promises (that doesn’t sound much like a promise at first) is found in the middle part of John 16:33:

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Other translations use the expressions,

“take heart — have confidence.”

When troubles strike, it’s common to focus our thoughts on the challenge we’re facing, isn’t it?

That’s where understanding the language of Hebrews 12:2 comes in:

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2)

Greek: ἀφορῶντες” (aphorontes)

  • Looking away from all else
  • Fixing one’s gaze upon
