It’s amazing and interesting the things we observe that can trigger a deep experience within our hearts and minds.

So it was with Nicolas Herman, who is best known as Brother Lawrence.
He had very little education and his life was difficult. While a young soldier, during winter, Nicolas’ attention was drawn to a barren tree.

Like Moses’ burning bush experience, in the depths of his heart, “Brother Lawrence” encountered God.

Some time later, Brother Lawrence entered the Discalced Carmelite Priory in Paris, where he spent the remainder of his life as a lay brother. As a lay brother, he was responsible for menial tasks such as cooking and cleaning.

He saw these menial activities as opportunities to practice the presence of God.

“The Practice of the Presence of God” is Brother Lawrence’s most famous collections of his letters and conversations, published after his death.
