PROPHET PROLIFERATION: Multiple Moseses

An arrogance that can come only from ignorance.

This post discusses the Prophet Moses.

It is published in parallel with an article on a similar theme, PLETHORA OF PROPHETS: Innumerable Isaiahs

Introduction

I came to Christ a month before Diana died; relatively late in life at 52. I realise only now that it was during the end of an era.

Days of yore

In those days everyone knew who was whom in the Bible. Right was right and wrong was wrong. There were even movies made about the Biblical characters, and these movies had a Biblical base whether you agreed with the Bible or not. One of these movies was, “The Ten Commandments,” about Moses. [There was a time that would not have to be explained.] The original was in 1923, the most famous being in 1956, both Cecil B. DeMille creations. The core theme being God+Israel+Moses → Bible → The Divine.

[The 1923 version may be viewed here ].

Days of now

But now modern scholarship tells how deluded The Body of Christ has been for a few thousand years. However, I’m yet to be convinced that we should Thank God for this scholarship which is so proud of being modern.

Here’s why.

During my time in Christendom there has been a relentless drive to gut-the-Divine coming from a surprising direction — The Hallowed Halls of the Theological Intelligentsia. The ones who are really in the know. The Elite that the Plebs like me should look to for guidance.

WHAT’S A CHUBBY OLD PRIVILEGED WHITE GUY (A BOOMER) SUPPOSED TO DO?

In my naïveté I thought that there was only one Moses. Nowadays there seem to be so many of him that Cecil B. would have to have a franchise similar to The Fast and the Furious to cover them all.

And Moses is not alone

As well as the Bible being crowded with Moseses, there are also a number of Isaiahs trying to muscle-in. The last I heard, there were three Isaiahs — but that was a while ago.

ALL THIS MAKES MY HEAD HURT. IT’S TIME FOR ME TO ACTUALLY TAKE A LOOK FOR MYSELF, AND NOT RELY ON MY THEOLOGICAL BETTERS.

There are a number of so-called inconsistencies, contradictions and discrepancies being discovered daily by modern scholarship. Two, Moses and Isaiah, should be enough to test the hypotheses.

Each will be examined separately. This post concerns Moses. It is published in parallel with a post about Isaiah, PLETHORA OF PROPHETS: Innumerable Isaiahs. Keep a look-out for it, it is the Isaiah post which goes to the crux of the confusion.

The objective is not to argue if the Bible is true

It is merely to examine the claims of the Men of Modern Letters.

MOSES

The Multiples of Moses Hypothesis (what is the plural of Moses?) is part of documentary hypothesis (DH), sometimes called the Wellhausen hypothesis. Wikipedia provides as good a description as any.

One of the cornerstones of the DH is that, in Deuteronomy, Moses mentions happenings and places that would not be known to him — especially his funeral.

Is there a fatal flaw of the documentary hypothesis?

I was surprised to discover that Greek logic perceives yesterday-today-tomorrow in exactly the opposite manner to Hebrew logic.

Western thinking is that we face tomorrow toward what is to come — even though we don’t see it. Hebrew thinking is to face yesterday because you can see from where you have come. This is confirmed by the meaning of the words used.

Yesterday → H8543 — tᵊmôl (temowl), from H4136 — môl(muwl) = front, (with prefix) towards the front of

Tomorrow H4279 — māḥār, from H309 — ‘āḥar = remain behind.

So what?

The dialogue between HaShem and Moshe, written in Exodus 33:18–23, about the latter being shown HaShem’s Glory appears to only be about keeping Moses alive but it also introduces the concept of prophecy.

EXODUS 33:18–23 INTRODUCES THE CONCEPT OF PROPHECY

In verse 23 God tells Moses, “Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back (H268 — ‘āḥôr); but My face shall not be seen.”

H268 — ‘āḥôr (‘achowr) = back parts

In this single word, the word unspoken heard by the Torah literate is, “And you shall see what is to come.” God was showing Moses the future, i.e. Prophecy. The deeper meaning of the whole conversation is in this one word — in the Hebraism.

THE PIVOTAL WORDS ARE “TORAH LITERATE”

Ratifying evidence?

It is written in Isaiah 42:23 || Who among you will give ear to this? Who will listen and hear for the time to come? (H268 — ‘āḥôr)

DISCUSSION ABOUT MOSES’S MULTIPLE IMPERSONATORS:

“Ignorance is bliss,” an oldie but a goodie.

All of those Torahfied, Gentile, (small ‘s’)scholastic Glitterati should learn a bit about Hebrew before they start telling Moses where he got it wrong. The Holy Spirit tells those who pay attention exactly, in the Bible, where He laid out History in advance.

Paying attention before thinking is very important. It gives the correct perspective on what should be thought about. In this case, the Glitterati is looking in the wrong direction so the Truth has snuck up behind them.

Why is it such a big deal?

Jesus’s story about the Rich Man and Lazarus, Luke 16:19–31, is well known.

It is written in v31 that Father Abraham says to the Rich Man, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.

If the Wellhausen hypothesis be true, a valid defence of the Rich Man could be, “Yes, but which Moses are you talking about?”

IT IS EASY TO MAKE UP THEORIES ABOUT WORDS OF WHICH YOU DON’T KNOW THE MEANING.

PLAUSIBLE IS NOT NECESSARILY TRUE.

I’m open to correction but it appears that there may be a number of worthless PhDs out there. If this wasn’t so serious it would be worth a giggle. It is sad that post-grad candidates are rewarded for publishing allegorical theses concerning invented meanings of words. What is sadder is that these theses are supervised and reviewed by the more qualified. In the cut-&-thrust of industry which produces tangible things, reviewed reports are owned equally by the author and reviewer. So the fantasy extends further up the food chain of academia. It is not the candidates who should hang their heads in shame. (I feel the love.)

HOW DIFFERENT WOULD THE CONDITION OF CHRISTENDOM BE IF THE SCHOLARS ACTUALLY PAID ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS WRITTEN?

I’VE STUCK MY CHIN OUT. NOW HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT.

The forgoing evidence has not been presented to convince any reader but to allow a personal decision to be made. There is much more to know about this subject.
