“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (NIV)

A couple months ago, I received news that a close colleague had passed away. He had been terminally ill for over a year and wrote a good-bye letter to me and my team. He left a wife and two teenage children behind. He and his wife didn’t believe in God. They truly believed that there was nothing after death. That is what hit me the most in his good-bye letter. He was very clear in his letter that nothing makes sense. It’s over and done with. They were dealt a poor hand from life’s deck of cards.

A few weeks later, an uncle of mine passed away. We were very close, went to church together, and shared the same love and passion for trying to understand and apply teachings from the Bible in our lives. Our sorrow when he passed away was deep, but fundamentally different from that of those who do not share our faith.
