“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple.” — Psalm 27:4 (NIV)

This passage starts with a sincere plea from David, who was called a man after God’s own heart. It’s a sincere prayer that shows how much David wanted to be with God, in His presence. His longing was simple and pure. When he came before God, he didn’t have a long list of material wishes or personal ambitions. All he wanted was to be close to the Lord — to be in the holy place where God’s spirit lives, see the splendor of the Almighty , and to truly pursue a relationship with Him within the sanctuary of His temple.

When I think about my own prayer life, I realize that most of my prayers are asking God to help me with my challenges or asking Him to support what I am doing. It’s not wrong to ask God for help; in fact, He asks us to cast our worries on Him. But Psalm 27:4 makes us take a closer look at where our spiritual priorities are. Are we really striving to be closer to Jesus, more than anything else in our life? Or are we too busy with other things, and only think about God when it’s convenient or when we really need help ?

The painful reality is that no earthly pleasure or refuge will give us the same satisfaction or security that God’s presence offers us. The world around us may promise us…
