Your furry friend is a naturally curious creature who adores spending time with you. And while going on walks and frolicking in the park are great ways to enjoy time together, more and more pet parents are discovering the joy of a regular Doga (dog yoga) practice.

Simply defined, Doga combines massage, meditation and gentle stretching for a blissful bonding experience with your best friend. Some dogs are natural yogis while others are more resistant and it’s important not to force them to participate.

Be patient as you try the poses below and allow your pet to dictate the pace.

Downward-Facing Dog

1. Invite your pooch to lie on your yoga mat.

2. Position yourself on your hands and knees with your dog underneath you.

3. Spread your fingers wide and press firmly through your palms.

4. Exhale as you tuck your toes and lift your knees off the floor.

5. Press away from the floor as you lift from your pelvis and straighten your legs (but don’t over-extend them).

6. Kiss your pooch on the top of his adorable head and hold for a count of five.

Wonderpaw Wheelbarrow

1. Ask your dog to lie down on your mat facing away from you.

2. Bend forward from the hips and gently place your hands under her hip joints.

3. Carefully pick up her back legs, ensuring constant, balanced support at her hips.

4. Calmly encourage her to stretch and flex her torso.

Heart & Hound

1. Sit facing your dog and establish eye contact.

2. Place one hand over your heart, and one on your dog’s chest.

3. Breathe deeply for a count of five (or however long your dog will allow).

Inner Mutt Mudra

1. Sit comfortably with your legs tucked underneath you and your dog on the mat facing you.

2. Clasp your hands behind your back and lean forward until your forehead rests on top of your dog’s head.

3. Connect with the energy of your pup and breathe deeply for a count of five.

A Most Satisfying Savasana

1. Lie on your back and place your dog gently on your torso.

2. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.

3. Pet your dog gently as you relax into this pose.
