‘It’s been a long time coming’

Dundee is the first Scottish city to host the event twice

Dundee is the first city in Scotland to host Radio 1’s Big Weekend twice, after previously hosting the festival in 2006. To do it again after twice missing out, first in 2017 and then in 2020 is quite the feat.

Dundee would have likely hosted Big Weekend in 2017 had the city won the UK City of Culture for that year. We missed out to Hull and they eventually went on to host Big Weekend that year.

Dundee was then prepared to host it in 2020 but Covid had prevented it from happening. BBC Radio 1 stated that they did want to return to the city in 2021 but Coventry was already booked, as they were the designate UK City of Culture that year.

Hosting it in 2023 is perfect for Dundee and it has been a long time coming. The economic benefits this will bring to the city will be huge and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying the music over the next three days!

11:53

“Bring on Big Weekend Dundee, then let’s see about a music festival of our own”

I wanted to dedicate my column this week in the Evening Telegraph and The Courier Online on Big Weekend! It is really exciting and I believe that we should host our own music festival again in the future.
