We have heard the very interesting news that Ruffian Games has rebranded to Rockstar Dundee, after being bought over by Rockstar North — but what exciting new ventures could the newly branded video games division bring to the table?

To get the lowdown, both Rockstar North and Ruffian Games kickstarted their journey in Dundee with the former being known as DMA Design back in the 1990s.

DMA Design produced Lemmings and the original Grand Theft Auto along with II and III before rebranding to Rockstar North and then moving to Edinburgh in 2000.

Ruffian Games, which launched in 2008, developed the popular Crackdown series back in the 2000s to the early 2010s and worked with Microsoft to work on Halo: The Master Chief Edition which released just last year.

With the rebrand and acquisition by Rockstar Games, the Rockstar name has made its way back into the city it hailed from after 20 years.

So what is going to happen at Rockstar Dundee then?

Well, what we do know is that according to a job listing posted back in October 2019, the description states that Rockstar North and Ruffian Games have been working together for over a year on “unspecified titles for Rockstar Games”.

That opens a lot of speculation.

Some of the interesting theories from Rockstar fans is that Rockstar Dundee could be in a position similar to 4J Studios (who are also based in the city) where they would port very popular video games to different consoles, like how 4J Studios have done with the Minecraft console versions . Similar to other theories that the studio could also develop a remaster of popular Rockstar North games like Red Dead Redemption.

Another interesting thing which Ruffian have been working on is Kinect games and also speculation that VR could be taken into account. Could Rockstar Dundee be developing VR games for Rockstar? It is possible!

But unspecified also takes into account original games as well. We could see new titles being developed and maybe even a continuation of the Crackdown series?

One thing’s for sure though — the new acquisition by Rockstar Games is looking to be extremely exciting and it is amazing to see the Rockstar name return to the city.

We can’t wait to see what Rockstar Dundee produces in this new partnership. So wishing Rockstar Games and those from Ruffian Games all the best in this new venture!
