So, right now you’ve possibly applied for an extended listing of internships with a number of world’s main companies, much like lots of your peers. There are many motives why getting an internship in a famous business enterprise is an exquisite beginning to your career.

Sounds exciting, right? But have you ever taken into consideration making use of internships at different types of companies, which includes a start-up, for example? Applying for an internship in a start-up might not have been your first thought, which is why this guide has been put together: to give you insight into another option that is available to you and to explain why a start-up internship might be a better choice.

Here are few solid reasons to intern for a startup:

  • Learn how a real business works : The minutiae, the boring excel sheets, the hard-working accounts, the importance of every penny, the exciting marketing, the ups and downs of achieving immediate goals, teamwork, activities, basic strategy, exponential growth in the early stages — startup intern provides a close-up view of businesses that are one-of-a-kind and unimaginable in a large corporate home. Unlike established corporations where every department and role is defined, startups often might need people to juggle multiple roles — providing the perfect excuse for you to get an idea of different departments, professions & industries.
  • Best utility of your time: A student usually has around 2–2.5 months long summer break. folks primarily arrange to learn different skills like developing their coding skills or learning a new language, doing online courses related to various domains, the issue that happens is that within the absence of a correct structural framework and any constraints, students usually lose track of their progress through the course of the 2 odd months. They sometimes find themselves with inadequate information and subsequently find it hard to cope with applying their knowledge to practice. On the other hand, performing at a start-up, one must complete tasks in stipulated amounts of time. Startups having lesser cash, brand recognition than their larger competitors, onus lies on them to be faster, smarter and better.
  • Taking up responsibilities : In every upcoming startup, time is valuable and every member, including interns, is an asset from creating your first website or publishing your first blog. Your technical skills will be put to the test. Starting a business requires high skills, and if you like to compete with yourself, then nothing better. When you work in a startup, you don’t just work there. You run it. You are one of them. We have taken care to include startups with very few employees, so you can rest assured that you are working under the direction of the CEO. Apart from the vast experience, you never know when you might be able to work under the famous company name of the next decade. Afterall, a good amount of companies we see now are not just 100 year old behemoths, but also exciting startups — most of which had humble beginnings.
  • Networking : The most exciting thing about interning in a startup is that we can meet many talented people who are just starting. Also, startup interns provide networking opportunities for a lifetime. You will meet like-minded people, and a boss interested in starting a business in itself can be a boon for many who want to embark on this path in the future.
  • Interning in a startup vs research internship: A Startup intern is sure to make the most unique resume you can aspire to. Interesting CV points not only attract more attention (much more so than the usual research project everyone would brag about) but also give you unique perspectives and allow the interview to take place while you stand a step ahead. More freedom is given to experiment with different and innovative ideas without any fear of risk of failure. Whereas a research internship is goal based and the necessity of succeeding in the research is the prime goal and taking risks are not usually encouraged. In research internships, usually students related to that particular field are entertained and deep knowledge about that domain is a prerequisite. But in a startup students of any field can explore areas of their interest. So why wait,go in the direction you like and stand with flying wings.
  • Interning in startup Vs Interning in well established company: If any person had to embody the word “visionary”, it has to be Steve jobs. Despite being a college dropout, he went on to revolutionise multiple industries. It would seem he just “knew” what people would want. But did you know that even he did his first internship at the age of 12 while he was studying at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California? While still studying in school, Jobs did his summer internship at the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) in Palo Alto, California. After his internship, he was later hired there, where he worked with Steve Wozniak as a summer employee. The legendary duo later went on to find Apple, and the rest is truly history.
