The professional world follows some unspoken rules which are not explicitly taught. Work etiquette is an essential factor that attributes to your professional success. Always do beforehand research about the organization you are gonna intern under and pay heed to their philosophies. The last thing you want is the organization to regret selecting you because of unprofessional behavior.

Formal outfits and background

Though your organization is aware it’s a virtual meet from your home, you don’t want to show up in lazy t-shirts and undone hair during a video conference. Having a mild formal outfit like a collared t-shirt can portray your level of readiness and enthusiasm in your work. Having a plain background can help the audience focus on you rather than getting distracted due to your environment. Try to minimize noise from your side and always have everything you might need near you.

Maintain ‘contact time’

It’s easy to assume your managers or colleagues are available at all hours of the day, provided the work is remote during this pandemic. But you never explicitly know about their availability. It’s always better to presume others are busy and behave accordingly. For example, you might want to send them a text or email asking about their working hours at home so that you can plan ahead and communicate efficiently. It is also better to send or ask for an agenda of the meet so that it’s easier to prepare.

Communication

Never interrupt during a discussion and always ask questions instead of straight-up dismissing what’s proposed by others. Instead, politely offer your idea and back it up by answering the FAQs. Try to look at the camera while addressing or listening, as this is synonymous with maintaining eye contact. Being responsive conveys that you are actively engaged. You definitely don’t want the meeting to turn out like an online lecture.

Professionalism

It’s best to not bring your personal emotions into your work. Try to act composed and be lively during the meet or conversation. Usage of proper body language, tone, and words can help uphold your professional behavior while pursuing a virtual internship. Be courteous towards everyone regardless of their position.

Conclusion:

  • Have proper attire and background for virtual meets.
  • Learn to remember names and other information regarding your organization.
  • Try to reach out only during ‘working hours’ if it is not something that requires immediate assistance. Escalation should be quick and efficient.
  • Positive body language and frequent eye contact show you are engaged and an ardent listener.
  • Communicate efficiently and be on point. Manage your tone and phrase your words meticulously.
  • Be empathetic and courteous towards everyone.

An internship is an excellent opportunity to experience the professional world. You are allowed to make reasonable mistakes as long as you’re constantly growing and learning from them. But it’s always preferable to be prepared in advance. Apart from subject expertise, it’s the behavior and conduct that sets you apart from the rest. Also, on paying heed to these work etiquettes don’t forget to add your uniqueness!
