How to Creatively Leverage Snapchat Geofilters

Experiment Overview

I wanted to see how easy it was to make a custom Family Reunion GeoFilter and Story on Snapchat. It took about 30 mins and $5 (for 1 hour). See how we did it below…

What is Snapchat?

Ever heard of Snapchat?

If you answered “no”, stop reading, go call your kid/nephew or niece/grandkid and let them enlighten you.

Snapchat is a social mobile app that has taken on the name of being a “Camera Company”. Their mission is to leverage the high-quality cameras everyone is carrying around in their pockets. Think Polaroid camera, but when it prints you can share it with anyone you want.

Now yes, the age demographics are pretty staggering when it comes to using Snapchat. Historically 70% of the users are Under 25, BUT you can also read from their public filings that over 50% of new users are 25+.

Below I’m going to show you how easy it is to make a Snapchat filter for a special event. It didn’t take more than 30 minutes of my time.

STEP 1: Getting Started (1–5 Mins)

a.) Go to, Select “Geofilters” in the menu

b.) Select the type of Geofilter you want to Create. We selected “Personal” because we were setting up a filter for the Family Reunion.

c.) You can upload your own artwork or design using Snapchat’s easy to make templates. Being that I’m not world’s greatest Photoshop artist, went with the template designer.

d.) The obligatory Snapchat Log-in. This is so they can review your art and show you the data on how much it was used.

STEP 2: Design the Artwork (5–20 Mins)

a.)We selected from an preset list of occasions. Don’t worry, you get to change all the wording.

b.) I chose this nice clean look and selected a fun color palette to go along with it. You get to edit and add text boxes as you please. Also, you can upload images to their preset designs.

Step 3: Setup Schedule & Geofence (1–5 Mins)

a.) Pick the time for the filter to show up on the Snapchat app.

b.) Draw the fence around your Reunion location. Snapchat’s guidelines say it needs to be between 20 thousand and 5 million square feet. I drew the region around my office building.

Step 4: Pay & Get Filter Approved (1–5 Mins)

a.)Pay with a credit card

b.) Wait for Snapchat to review and approve your artwork.

Time to Setup a “Story” for the Event

The recently released custom location Story feature allows you to setup a named story that everyone in the location can submit their “Snaps” to (defined as pictures or short video). I setup a story for “Lippert Family Reunion 2017” to go with the Geofilter we just made.

Anyone in the location of your “Story” can can upload their Snaps creating a collection of photos and videos. I did this at my wife’s birthday party, but it has a great application here as well. The Story is alive for 24hrs past the last upload, and the Snapchat user that created it can download the entire submission. (Details Here)

See how we did it below…

Step 1: Setup the Story

a.) On the App select the Create Story (More Details Here). Name the Story.

b.) Once have added the story, anyone in the area can now upload to this event :) The Snapchat setup user can download the entire story and save it FOREVER!

Setting up the Geofilter and story was pretty easy. Snapchat is a great social tool for direct sharing. As they continue to release new features and become THE Camera Company, they are revolutionizing the way we connect.
