Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger
Marvel: The character Tyrone Johnson was raised in a poor South Boston neighborhood. Tyrone was a good student and he stuttered, a disability he struggled to master with the support of his best friend, Billy. When Tyrone was 17, he and Billy witnessed the robbery of a local store and the fatal shooting of its clerk. The thieves fled, and Billy ran too. He feared that he and Tyrone might be wrongly suspected of the crime. When a policeman ordered Billy to stop, Tyrone tried to proclaim Billy’s innocence; but his stuttering made it impossible to speak clearly, and the officer shot Billy dead. Feeling responsible for Billy’s death and afraid of the police, Johnson ran away to New York City.
There are people in real life just like Tyrone Johnson. They are in the wrong place at the wrong time. There are people raised in the same kind of neighborhood as Tyrone. There are good people found in the worst neighborhoods.
Marvel: Tyrone considered robbing Tandy Bowen, a rich girl who had also run away from home; yet when someone else robbed her first, Tyrone impulsively tackled the thief and returned Tandy’s purse. The two teens became fast friends. When the naïve Tandy accepted an offer of shelter from some strange men, Tyrone went along to protect her; however, the two teens were soon forcibly delivered to criminal chemist Simon Marshal. He tested a new synthetic heroin which is a drug on the teens. Somehow they survived injections of the drug, and they fled. The two teens dubbed themselves Cloak & Dagger and declared war on drug crime.
Like Cloak and Dagger, people that want the same good thing should join together. It does not matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from. It does not matter if you are rich or poor. In the Cloak and Dagger’s case, crime had no respecter of persons and neither did death that came for Billy. Crime and death does not know race. When it comes to crime or death, it can hit anyone. We are all in the same boat taking chances everyday when we go out into the world. The two teens were in a situation where they had to join together and fight. Cloak and Dagger became partners.
