TEACHER GIFTS THAT DON’T BREAK THE BANK

There are two times of the year we think of teachers: the holidays and the end of the year. First and foremost, please remember that teachers are people too. They have lives outside of school.

BE THOUGHTFUL AND GIVE USEFUL GIFTS

If you all chip in as a class, consider gifting a mani/pedi, a gift card to the teacher’s favorite restaurant, or even a gift card to a store like TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. I once sat at an end-of-year party where the students presented their teacher with a clay art serving plate. Splattered all over the plate was each student’s thumbprint, turned into little lady bugs.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the teacher would donate it to Goodwill or sell it at her next tag sale! Please!

Did the parents actually think the teacher would cherish that plate and use it at her next holiday dinner?

My child’s class gave the teacher a mani/pedi at her favorite salon. I’m sure our gift was cherished and used immediately. You could even give a gift to benefit the classroom or a gift card to Walmart since so many teachers have to buy their own supplies.

If you’re giving gifts individually, be thoughtful.

No one needs more mugs!

Hand lotions and soaps are always great gifts since everyone can use them. A candle is okay — it’s easily regiftable if the teacher doesn’t like it. If you know what the teacher likes to read, a book could be a nice gift. Even just a manicure works well since it should be about thanking the teacher and who doesn’t like a little pampering sometimes? Certain homemade items can be thoughtful and useful. We used to make homemade jam and it was always a hit. If you know the teacher likes gardening, why not give a nice potted plant? Depending on the teacher a nice scarf or gloves might be appreciated. You don’t have to break the bank to be thoughtful.

A great gift for anyone and starting at $5 is a gift card to a local coffee shop. Anyone from teachers, to bus drivers, to mail delivery people appreciate this gift. If the person doesn’t drink coffee, they can always regift it and will appreciate the thought.

Since teachers see so many kids over the course of their careers, it’s always better to give a gift that the teacher will truly appreciate and use. That is the best way you can thank him/her.
