The Gullibility of Social Media Users

Social media can connect people around the world and in many cases this shows us how we can unite around one cause and offer support for one another in times of tragedy, but then you also have those moments when you think, why am I friends with you, you cannot be this gullible!

Everyone has seen the posts. I’m talking about post such as this child has lost his arm in a shark attack, a unicorn has pierced through his head, or something along those lines that says 1 like = one prayer, but if you share it, that equals 10. These drive me absolutely crazy because it doesn’t provide any backup information on the victim and do you really believe typing amen will do anything? Why not take the time to actually say a prayer?

For example, this photo on your left. This was supposedly a Delhi gang rape victim who had passed away according to the Movie Talkies Facebook page. They said one like equaled one prayer for the girl. Eventually this post started gaining a lot of traction, it eventually had 20,000 likes, 3500 shares and 1,500+ comments. This had been seen all around the world but people were being lied to. The girl for a matter of fact was a boy, and was not from Delhi but from Johannesburg. He was involved in a fight and was already fighting a rare bone disease that caused them to be brittle. Movie Talks was aware of this as well but they took the time to use the photo instead as a marketing technique to draw people to like their page. Feel fooled?

I think it’s safe to say, don’t believe everything you read on the Internet kids…
