The “Lame Stream” Media
You’ve undoubtedly heard the attacks on the press and news outlets where they are referred to as the “Mainstream Media,” or the super clever “lame stream media.” It’s an effort to discredit the press by the right wing pundit class.
Well to start, as horrifying as it may be, Fox News is the #1 rated cable news network in the country, making them, by definition, the MOST lame stream.
That aside — behind these potshots they take at the “MLM,” is some sort of vaguely worded, anti-capitalist, left wing conspiracy theories of which the “MLM” is supposed to be an active participant.
These accusations imply some level of conspiracy and coordination amongst the major news networks.
The 2 main reasons that this is bullshit both begin with the fact that these companies are owned by giant corporations.
Fox News — 21st Century Fox (formerly News Corp)
MSNBC — Comcast
CNN — Time Warner
HLN — Time Warner
ABC — Disney
NBC — Comcast
CBS — Viacom
First, these huge, publicly traded corporations are beholden to shareholders. I can’t imagine why they would pushing for some sort of leftist, socialist agenda. It would be against their financial interests to do so. Just look at these same corporations’ attacks on Net Neutrality for their real views on public vs private interests.
And as huge, competing corporations, they have no vested interest in working together, as they don’t want each other to succeed. They are in constant competition, displayed by their fierce race to be the first to cover any given story. A competitors failure is good for them. If one of these networks goes under, the others pick up their audience.
The second reason the conspiracy argument makes no sense also has to do with the fact that they are giant corporations. As someone who has spent a good chunk of his career in corporate conference rooms consulting for companies of this size, I can safely say there is no way corporate management could execute a conspiracy on this scale. The level of coordination required to execute a conspiracy this vast would require a vast army of talented, highly capable people working in perfect concert.
I once witnessed a Fortune 500 company take 6 months to decide on a logo. No way they are successfully plotting the downfall of America.
So why do these “mainstream” attacks persist? It’s because numerous outlets are providing news they don’t like. The reason can’t possibly be that its actually the news, but rather that they must be coordinating to plot against America.
