The leaves are changing colors. The days are getting shorter. The weather is getting cooler, and with that, it’s the perfect time of year to add a great book to your reading list. Whether you are looking for a new release or a “new to you” read, autumn and reading go hand-in-hand. Perhaps because the kids are back to school and college students are off to start a new semester, there’s something special in the air this time of year — a curiosity, a love of learning, an insatiable desire to discover the world.

With that in mind, we compiled a list of books to add to your fall reading list. There’s no time like the present moment to add these reads to your bookshelf.

1. “Real Life” by Brandon Taylor

Set in a Midwestern college town, “Real Life” is a coming-of-age story with a mix of secrecy, intimacy, and violence. Readers will follow Wallace, a black, queer young man from the South, as he tries to keep his secrets at bay by keeping his new college friends at a distance. However, after a series of events over the course of a late summer weekend, Wallace’s defenses are on the verge of being destroyed.

2. “Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro

A New York Times bestselling novel, “Klara and the Sun” poignantly juxtaposes love and loneliness in this take on what artificial intelligence might look like in the future. Klara is an “Artificial Friend” with outstanding observational qualities who carefully watches the behavior of the passersby from her place in a store. As she narrates with an innocent naivete and hopes for a customer to choose her, she observes human behavior and how the same things we desire — money, power, and status — are the very things that wound us.

3. “These Violent Delights” by Micah Nemerever

This crime novel exposes the depths of human desire and the darkness that can spring forth when love turns into obsession. Set in 1970s Pittsburgh, the storyline follows two college students who develop a deep friendship/infatuation that develops into codependency. Their growing obsession with one another leads to a violent act in order to stay together.

4. “Effortless: Make It Easier to Do What Matters Most” by Greg McKeown

A simple guide to achieving your goals, “Effortless” offers tips on how to make the most essential tasks easier in order to achieve the results you want. Author Greg McKeown refutes the idea that burnout and being perpetually exhausted are inevitable parts of getting ahead. Instead, he offers actionable advice on how to work smarter.

5. “Autumn” by Ali Smith

The first edition in Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet, “Autumn” tells the story of two old friends as they look back on the past and imagine the future as they stand in the present-day, divided United Kingdom. Smith explores themes of harvest and the richness of the season as she takes a light-footed approach to history.

6. “How I Built This: The Unexpected Paths to Success from the World’s Most Inspiring Entrepreneurs” by Guy Raz

If you have ever wondered how successful entrepreneurs do what they do, look no further than award-winning journalist and NPR host Guy Raz’s book “How I Built This.” Raz shares interviews with 200 highly successful entrepreneurs and uncovers their stories on the tools needed to launch a successful business and how they pivot and manage adversity in the process.

7. “It Had to Be You: A Novel” by Georgia Clark

This witty romantic comedy tells the story of a beloved, Brooklyn-based wedding planner and the aftermath of his death. When he leaves half of the business to his girlfriend, Savannah, it puts his business partner, Liv, in a hairy position — having to work with someone she does not get along with. What starts off as a personal and professional nightmare turns into a secret romance and second chance at love.
