With the summer solstice on June 20, summer is officially here! In countries like France and Italy, many working professionals close their doors for July and August. So that means no dentist or dry cleaning for a few months. Many countries in Europe take their summer holiday seriously, and we are all for it!

Summer is a great time for rest and relaxation, as well as time for writing. We brainstormed a few fun places that authors can let their creative juices flow freely this summer. Grab a pen, your journal, or laptop, and take some time this summer to recharge while you allow the adventure, whimsy, and warm weather of summertime to inspire you. There’s no better time to write.

Here are a few great places for authors to write during their summer holidays:

1. Anywhere by water

Whether it’s an ocean, a lake, or even a pool, something about being near water sparks creativity! It also breeds calm, quiet, and relaxation. Studies even show that people who live near water report better mental health and overall well-being. So if you are looking to set aside time to create a space for respite this summer, grab your pen and journal or your laptop and head to the water.

2. A writer’s retreat

Now that the world is reopening, it might be the perfect time to book the ultimate writer’s getaway you’ve been dreaming of. A writer’s retreat is such a great opportunity to surround yourself with like-minded people to learn from, to share with, and to befriend. After this allotted time for creativity, you might just walk away with a refined writing technique and even a few new characters in mind.

3. A cabin or campgrounds

Another perfect place to get some peace and quiet, camping will help you reconnect with nature. When there is nothing but you and the great outdoors (be sure to silence your phone), you will have all the time you need to write and create. Try out one of the great U.S. National Parks, but be sure to do your research and book ahead keeping in mind COVID-19 restrictions.

4. A resort

For the writers who are living the luxe life, here’s a great opportunity to get away for a little alone time — just you and your creative mind. If you have the money to spend, book a room at a resort for a weekend or a few days this summer. Pamper yourself and relax. Consider this to be an investment in yourself. Taking some alone time might just be the creative spark you are looking for.

5. When traveling or on a road trip

It’s been said that the best writers are the people who live full and intentional lives. So this summer be intentional with your time and go somewhere new. Whether that is a city within driving distance, a new-to-you town that is nearby, or perhaps even abroad, take time to adventure this summer. Bring your pen and journal with you. You never know what you may see or who you may meet along your journey that will spark a great idea!
