With the summer solstice less than a week away and the official start day of summer upon us, we are eager to kick our feet up by the pool and soak in the sun. Whether you are booking summer excursions or planning to spend your time relaxing by the water, you will want to take a great book with you.

Here’s to hoping that your summer 2021 is better than last year with these great summer book recommendations.

1. “A Theatre for Dreamers” by Polly Samson

Author Polly Samson weaves together a tale of summer heat, passion, and the loss of innocence. In her novel, “A Theatre for Dreamers,” readers explore the dynamics between expatriate artists, authors, and poets on the Greek island of Hydra. Paradise begins to unravel at the feet of a love triangle that will test the characters’ dreams of utopia.

2. “Act Your Age, Eve Brown: A Novel” by Talia Hibbert

A classic tale of opposites attracting, “Act Your Age, Eve Brown” focuses on the love-hate relationship of the precarious Eve Brown and the perfectionist bed and breakfast owner, Jacob Wayne. After their worlds collide (quite literally) when Eve interviews for a chef position, they find themselves constantly in close quarters. However, their annoyance and animosity toward each other quickly turn into something else.

3. “Impostor Syndrome: A Novel” by Kathy Wang

Kathy Wang weaves together a few relatable but very powerful themes in her book “Impostor Syndrome.” From the pursuit of the evanescent American Dream to women in tech to the pride and hubris of Silicon Valley, this part satire, part suspense novel will keep you turning the pages to find out what will happen next.

4. “Seven Days in June” by Tia Williams

If you were given a second chance at love, would you take it? Author Tia Williams tells the story of two authors, Eva Mercy and Shane Hall, who reconnect at a literary event in Brooklyn during the heat of the summer. Unbeknownst to anyone else, the two previously met 20 years ago as teenagers and fell in love. Now, with just a week to reconnect, Eva has questions for the man who broke her heart, but she also can’t wait for Shane to exit her city and her life for good.

5. “The Other Black Girl” by Zakiya Dalila Harris

Another page-turner that will pique your interest this summer, “The Other Black Girl” is the perfect read for anyone who has ever felt overlooked or manipulated in the workplace. Lead character, Nella Rogers, works as an editorial assistant at an all-white publishing house, with a work environment filled with microaggressions. Thus, her excitement when another Black employee, Hazel, is added to the team is not surprising. However, that love quickly turns to suspicion and apprehension after a series of unfortunate and thrilling events.

6. “The Son of Mr. Suleman: A Novel” by Eric Jerome Dickey

“The Son of Mr. Suleman” will engross you from page one. Dickey explores some complex but powerful themes including: racism, colorism, sexual assault, microagressions, family legacies, and the power of love and death. The book was called “The best new books to read” by the New York Post for a reason. It’s the book you won’t want to put down this summer.
