For a few hours my star went out.

My Medium star, that is.

The four-pointed yellow star that twinkles at the base of my avatar — the one in the bottom left-hand corner of my author profile page. The same one that appears when I leave a comment on a story.

I don’t think anyone but me would have noticed my avatar sans star. Just like no one but me would’ve seen the ‘resume membership’ button that appeared in the top right-hand corner of my profile page.

It’s the first time my star’s gone out because it’s the first time since I took out a Medium subscription in September 2020 that I wasn’t a paid-up member.

I would’ve avoided my star going out if I could’ve, but as it was I didn’t have much choice.

The Story Goes Like This

I knew my Medium subscription was due for renewal at the end of October. I had it noted in my ‘to do’ list as one of the multitude of tasks I would need to attend to that week.

My Medium membership is set to automatically renew each year. Ordinarily I wouldn’t have to do anything other than pay my credit card bill.
