It’s episode great eight of American Horror Story and all those depraved thanksgiving jokes I was going to make at this shows expense are wasted since it decided to take a break for a week. So let’s just get right into it and break it down by story:

Detective Fucked-Up-Sherlock

The episode picks up where the last one left off with Ren committing suicide by car, John finally realizes that Ren was one of the vampire children in the coffins and heads off to the hotel. He violently confronts Liz Taylor about the Ten Commandments killer, but Liz, who’s still in grief over Tristan’s death lashes out at John and tells him off. Sally then appears and takes him to his hotel room where she says he will find answers. She shows him a secret vault containing trophy’s taken from the Ten Commandments killer’s victims and reveals to John that he was in fact the killer himself. John has a rush of memories and realizes that this is true.

We then go to the morgue where Johns partner is examining Ren’s body. John comes in and confesses that he is the killer and begins to tell him how he became this.

John reveals that he was visiting the Hotel Cortez five years ago after a fairly bad case. He was looking to get drunk but runs into Donovan who brings him to Mr. March. March is enticed by Johns destructive mental state and attempts to seduces him to become his apprentice in serial killing. He gives him a final push by having Lady Gaga kidnap Holden so that John will begin on the road to his cause.

John ends up living two lives, one as an unhappy man at home and one as a friend to Mr March. March seduces John some more and John finally agrees to become his apprentice after March convinces him to kill a man by convincing him that he was a pedophile. He goes to the mans house and beats him to death with a giant trophy in the mans possession. John then goes to commit suicide but is saved by Mr March.

John and Sally become lovers and partners in crime. But it turns out that Sally was going to let him die but March berates her for this and reveals that the addiction demon would feed on her if she doesn’t do what March says. Sally takes care of John some more until March shows John his vault and convinces him to become the Ten-Commandments killer as well as the lead detective on the case.

John shares some more details about the specific killings but his partner doesn’t believe him, John then reveals that he knows that his partner is interested in his wife and kills him for another commandment killing. John then goes back to the hotel and reveals to Iris that he knows who he is now. She tells him he can leave and put everything that happened behind him but he refuses and goes up to his room. There he and March admire his latest trophy with John revealing that he is fully behind March’s cause now and vows to finish the killings with March gleefully reveling in this as the episode ends.

Analysis

Only one story tonight and this episode is probably all the better for it, with the focus being entirely on Detective Fucked-Up-Sherlock and the reveal that he was the Ten Commandments Killer all along. This is not really a surprising revelation since it was an obvious twist since basically near the start of the season, however the reveal was done a whole lot better than I thought it would be. The only problem now is I don’t know where John’s story goes from here, does he get caught or killed? Does he complete the killings? If so, then what? There’s (apparently) only two episodes left so I guess we’ll see.

Miscellaneous

  • I wonder if Dr. Alex is going to learn what her husband has been up too. I can’t imagine that will end well.
  • Also two episodes left and the vampire children apocalypse hasn’t even been referenced once, so much for that plot line.
  • I got a commercial for Lucifer tonight, that’s either going to be really bad or really good.
  • Also the increasingly silly OJ Simpson commercials got even more silly this week.
  • Tonight’s song recommendation is “Cain” by Tiamat because hey, here’s another Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines song just for the hell of it.
  • Also because I found it amusing, here’s the podcast Retsupurae did on American Horror Story.
