On The Entertainment Engine podcast show, we welcome our next guest, documentary filmmaker Anthony Saldana

Anthony Saldana & Jason Figueira. They are multi-time award-winning filmmakers of documentaries focusing on the under-represented like people with disabilities — on this show we talk with Anthony.

Besides their experience in filmmaking, they have each had to deal with their own personal adversity. Anthony suffered a serious back injury, and Jason lives with OCD, obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Film Making — Straight Off The Canvas!

The documentary, Straight Off The Canvas, has been named Best Public Awareness Video in the 42nd Annual Telly Awards. Straight Off The Canvas also won a Communicator Award of Excellence in Documentary and Award of Distinction in Education.

The Telly Awards honours excellence in video and television across all screens and is judged by leaders from video platforms, television, streaming networks, production companies including Netflix, Dow Jones, Duplass Brothers Productions, Complex Networks, A&E Networks, Hearst Media, Nickelodeon, ESPN Films and Vimeo.

Straight Off The Canvas is a documentary that profiles visually impaired artists in New York City.

Art is not simply a visual medium. Blind people can enjoy, create and teach art as a creative expression. The film focuses on the talented art students at the Lavelle School for the Blind in The Bronx.

“In the face of a year like no other filmmaker, Anthony Saldana, has continued to defy the limitations of our new world, in continuing to create compelling and engaging work”, says Telly Awards Executive Director Sabrina Dridje.

New ideas and stories will always find a way to break through to an audience.”

I hope that this recognition brings awareness that people with disabilities are capable of being successful artists. Our goal is that museums around the world need to be more accessible,” director and executive producer, Anthony Saldana said.

“It is an honour to win a Telly Award and two Communicator Awards for my dream documentary, Straight Off The Canvas.

How they meet:

Queens, New York native, Anthony Saldana, feels it is his obligation as a media professional to give a voice to people in his community that aren’t heard often in mainstream media.

While known by his friends and family for his sense of humour, he wants to be taken seriously as a filmmaker.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies from the Queens College City University of New York and a Masters of Arts Degree in Communications from the New York Institute of Technology.

Anthony met his co-producer and assistant director Jason Figueira at Queens College. Jason Figueira was born and raised in Queens, NY.

He has extensive professional experience in television production, from pre-production to post-production.

He followed his passion for social justice filmmaking to Hofstra University. After completing his award-winning thesis film titled “Access: Democracy in a Digital Age,” Jason obtained his M.F.A in Documentary Studies.

Jason and Anthony have plans to continue telling high-quality educational stories.

“The work entered into this year’s 27th Annual Communicator Awards is even more impressive than in seasons’ past.

This year’s entries are a truly stellar embodiment of our “Communication is everything” tagline,” noted Eva McCloskey, managing director of the AIVA.

She added, “On behalf of the Academy, I would like to thank all of this season’s entrants for their willingness to produce such boundary-pushing, effective and outstanding work.”
